Genealogy ( once upon a time (and a thousand times), in a forest in Uruguay, Poland, France, Spain...)

Pesaj, León, Judith and Doña Vicenta.
The tallest: my grandpa, and before him, his brother. To the left of the photography, my great grandma and to the right, her friend.
Three polish immigrants and a Spanish woman in a forest in Montevideo, collecting money in secret in order to send to the republicans during the Spanish Civil War.

The work Genealogy it is the result of the decomposition in images, of all the layers that form the photography that I have described above. An instant in time that contains many stories intertwined, from Uruguay, from Poland, from Spain. About sorrow, war, deaths and exile. So true and so fictional as the construction of our own identities.

A family tree, a possible origin in images of my own (hi)story. Drypoint on Plexiglas. Etching as a medium, and as a way to remember and to record. Postcards that are ordered by a genetic pattern. Red. An illness that is transferred through generations. That seems to be impossible to erase, shaping even our present. Being all this veils and nuances the ones which reconstruct a forgotten memory, that could only be glimpsed throughout contradictory stories and a photography. That faded image.

The Genealogy piece aims to return to the photo an artificial three-dimensionality. The dismemberment of the elements that build the image, allow me to understand, digest and relive that which is neither comprehensible, nor digestible and much less capable of being experienced again. Throughout layers I try, knowingly and uselessly, to reconstruct the lost spatiality of memory.

For the many people, for the many stories
that are no longer there
and my incessant need to understand
why of the reflection.
